What Is Jian Zhan?
Jian Zhan (建盏), also known as Jian Ware or Chinese black ceramics," is a type of Chinese stoneware that originated during late Tang Dynasty (AD 618 to 907) and flourish during Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279).
These stonewares were highly prized during the Song Dynasty and were favored by the royals, nobles and the literati. They are highly regarded for their distinctive dark, lustrous glazes and often in simple, elegant forms.
Today, it is valued by collectors and enthusiasts of Chinese ceramics for its historical and aesthetic significance.

The process of making Jian ware is complex and requires skilled craftsmanship. It involves 13 elaborated stages, from preparing the clay to firing the ceramics in specific kilns.
The entire process, from clay preparation to the final product, demands a high level of craftsmanship and knowledge.
Each piece is a work of art, reflecting the skill and artistry of the potter. Each Jian Ware is completely unique and should not be identical.
Jian Ware With Their Elegant Curves
Jian Ware teacups or bowls come in various shapes, each designed to enhance the tea-drinking experience and contribute to the aesthetics of the moment.
The literati during the Song Dynasty categorize these shapes into four main profiles, each with its unique charm and purpose. They are:
- Bound Rim 束口器型 (Shu Kou Qi Xing)
- Wide Rim 敞口器型 (Chang Kou Qi Xing)
- Recessed Rim 敛口器型 (Lian Kou Qi Xing)
- Flared Rim 撇口器型 (Pie Kou Qi Xing)
